Guiness World Records has recognised RuneScape as the most popular free MMORPG in the world for the second year in a row. At the 2008 Leipzig Games Convention Jagex was presented with a certificate to commemorate the achievement.

The developer of this game revealed that the simplicity and accessibility of RuneScape are the major appeal to players who are not willing to spend too much money on the expensive and processor-intensive games. In return, RuneScape is perhaps the certain game that kills your time.

RPG reveals that RuneScape is a fun, addictive game in general. The PC Gamer UK says that while the "traditional RPG values of questing, slaying monsters and developing your character in a familiar medieval setting" won't "have the big boys trembling in their +2 Boots of Subscriber Gathering," this is offset by the game's accessibility through a web browser, "compounded by a version of the game that allows free adventuring player the opportunity to upgrade to a members' account."
