A pet is a non-combatant NPC that can be owned when a player reach a certain level in Summoning. Some of pets are obtained from quests, while some are rewards for completing a certain task. There are non-summoning related pets and summoning related pets currently in Runescape. In this article, we are focusing on non-summoning related pets including cat, pet fish and pet rock.

Cat
Cats can be kept as pets. They are apparently intelligent, and have their own sophisticated languages that players can only interpret with a catspeak amulet. Cats were the first proper pets that players could have. Players were not required for the summoning skill, as long as anyone who had completed the quest Gertrude’s Cat could have a pet cat.

Get your cat from Gertrude. “Gertrude has lost her cat named Fluffs and desperately wants it reunited with her. Can you find it?” It is an easy quest only available to members. Upon completion of Gertrude’s Cat, players can have a kitten from Gertrude. If you lose this kitten, you can go to Gertrude and she will sell you one for 100 RS gp.

Instead of walking around with your kitten, it is often possible to train other non-combat skills while raising your kitten. Keep a few pieces of food in your inventory at all times, and train any of the following skills: firemaking, woodcutting, fletching, smithing, smelting, magic, etc. Feed it whenever it is hungry, and give it attention from time to time. Fishing Swordfish and Tuna is ideal for raising your kitten, because you can use the tuna you fish whenever your kitten is hungry.

Pet Fish
If you are not interested in keeping a cat, you may have fish as your pet. A Pet fish may be obtained from Harry's Fishing Shop in Catherby. Before going speak to Harry and catch the fish, you should have a fishbowl which can be crafted out of glass with level 42 crafting. You can purchase one from others as well. Use the fishbowl on a water source to fill it with water so the fish has a home to move about in; then, add a piece of seaweed so the fish has a comfort zone to 'hide' in.

There are 3 things that you can do with your fish: you can talk to it, you can play with it, and you can use it on a pet cat for a funny reaction.

Pet Rock
Players are required to complete The Fremennik Trials quest to get a pet rock. Speak to Askeladden, the young Fremenik outside the beer hall. He will happily supply you with a free, fun-filled Pet Rock. Rocks can usually find their own food, and don't often need attention, so rocks are a good choice for a pet. When wielding the pet rock, it acts like a members weapon in a free world, it is equipped, but you still fight unarmed. The pet rock is just for show and humor.
