Runescape has migrated their storage systems. But unfortunately, five days' worth of Friend List and Clan Chat updates for approximately one quarter of the players are gone during the process. Hope you didn't lose your friends, and we feel sorry for these who did. But lucky none of players have their RS gold lost.
RS has moved their core systems to central London. They are switching from a local server and disk storage system to a storage area network (SAN). The SAN is designed to allow us to scale our storage needs better in the future, and should have provided Runescape with more resilience in the case of hardware or network failures.
However, during one of the system moves, they inadvertently triggered a flaw in the new storage system. And the date of Friends and Clan Chat is not saved to disk at all, so wasn’t there for they to rollback to. They are currently investigating the root cause of the write failures.
The Friends List can be used to send private messages to other players, including moderators, and to see which worlds they are currently on. If a player's private chat is set to 'off', then they will always appear as offline and it will not be possible to send them a private message. If their private chat is set to 'friends', then only people on their Friends List will be able to send them private messages.
The Clan Chat feature allows any player to create their own chat channel and assign ranks to other players in their channel. Similarly to public chat, any messages sent in a chat channel are sent to all players in that channel, except if the sender is on any player's ignore list or vice versa.Clan chat is available to members and non-members, and was released in the Clan Chat update on the 6 August 2007. Players do not need to set up their own channel in order to use someone else's.
